Black Balloons

The party is over; diamonds shatter upon the floor where we dance unwarily contemplating each others next move. Although red wine lingers within the cracks of your lips, you're intoxicated by the lights spinning on the ceiling. A black balloon with a red piece of string floats among the fog; dreary and thick of stale cigarette smoke. You're smiling, stumbling on the words that threaten to fall from the corners of your mouth. Amazingly, they fail to canvas the space between us as you drop the bottle held loosely in your hand. I'm nervous, deciphering the language of your movement. Like a movie, black and white, you move forward anticipating the reaction of envious spectators. Your lips find mine; surprisingly cool, longing for my response. Much like the black balloon, I drift away in your kiss--

15 priceLESS Gifts You Can Give Yourself

Loving this advice from one of my favorite bloggers, bellaMUMMA & needed to reblog!

1. The freedom to be unapologetically YOU. Faking it is fatiguing. It’s much wiser to just be yourself – faults and all. Remember, imperfection is beauty; madness is genius. It is better to be ridiculously you, than ridiculously boring by trying to be the same as everyone else.

2. An uninhibited imagination. Life is changing faster and faster with every passing day. The world tomorrow looks nothing like the world today. And the people with big imaginations are the ones not just living it, they are creating it.

3. An open mind. Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don’t; everyone can teach you something new. The purpose of keeping an open mind isn't just to change your mind, it’s to expand your mind to understand the true potential in each moment of your life.

4. The commitment to fail forward. Failing is as certain as sunsets and detours. So why exert energy avoiding the unavoidable? Embrace it. Get real comfortable with that uneasy feeling of going against the grain and trying something new. Doing so will always take you to places you never thought you could go.

5. Using encouraging words. Words are powerful. They can create or they can destroy. The simple words you choose, especially when you speak to yourself or about yourself, can offer encouragement and positive thoughts, or they can send you further into despair.
Choose your words wisely.

6. A ‘glass’ filled with the right things. It’s not just whether your glass is half-empty or half-full that matters. It's what you’re filling your glass with. Be sure to fill it with those things that satisfy your soul: good friends and family to love, passions to pursue, dreams to fulfill, and charity for others.

7. Enjoying what you have. Don't spoil what you have by desiring what you have not. Enjoy your blessings right now. Remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for. Celebrate this. Work on being so appreciative and happy that when others look at you, they become a little happier too.

thoughtviolently.tumblr.com
8. Lifelong learning. You are simply the product of what you know, so develop a passion for acquiring knowledge. It begins in the heart and home. Read for pleasure, ask questions, analyse, and exploit your curiosities. In other words, learn to actually love the act of learning.

9. Hope. Remember, it’s always darkest just before the dawn. Your troubles may be too dense and dark right now for you to see the light, that doesn't mean there isn't a strong spirit within them, or a beautiful sunrise just beyond the horizon.

10. Spirituality. Faith elevates your view of the universe, your world, and your life. You are also made of heart, soul, and will. And decisions in your life should be based on more than just what everyone else is doing on the outside.

11. Stability and love at home. A stable home becomes the foundation on which you build the rest of your success. Subconsciously we all need to know we have a family core who we can trust, and who is going to be there for us through thick and thin.

12. A positive temper. Take a slow, deep breath, and remind yourself of how much more effective you can be by maintaining a positive approach. Take note of your anger, let it go, redirect your focus on being your best self, and you’ll surely emerge with a smile.

13. A sense of humor is a major defense against minor troubles – something life is filled with. So laugh as often as you can with those around you, for your sake and theirs.

14. Doing the best you are capable of. Don’t complain about something you can actually do something about. Take action. Do the best that you’re capable of. Those who get the most from life are those who give the most. Find something you’re passionate about, and keep  interested in it and focused on it.

15. Being the change you want to see. Happiness, freedom, and peace of mind are always attained by giving them without expectation. Happiness becomes yours when you live it. Everything you need you are already capable of being. So smile from the heart and fulfill the destiny that is yours.

What Our Parents Never Taught Us

Here’s what our parents never taught us:

You will stay up on your rooftop until sunlight peels away the husk of the moon,
chainsmoking cigarettes and reading Baudelaire, and
you will learn that you only ever want to fall in love with someone
who will stay up to watch the sun rise with you.
You will fall in love with train rides, and sooner or later you will
realize that nowhere seems like home anymore.
A woman will kiss you and you’ll think her lips are two petals
rubbing against your mouth.
You will not tell anyone that you liked it.
It’s okay.
It is beautiful to love humans in a world where love is a metaphor for lust.
You can leave if you want, with only your skin as a carry-on.
All you need is a twenty in your pocket and a bus ticket.
All you need is someone on the other end of the map, thinking about the supple
curves of your body, to guide you to a home that stretches out for miles
and miles on end.
You will lie to everyone you love.
They will love you anyways.
One day you’ll wake up and realize that you are too big for your own skin.
Molt.
Don’t be afraid.
Your body is a house where the shutters blow in and out
against the windowpane.
You are a hurricane-prone area.
The glass will break through often.
But it’s okay. I promise.
Remember,
a stranger once told you that the breeze
here is something worth writing poems about.

Spring Cleaning for the Mind: 10 Ways to Make Your Day Better

1. Make someone else smile. – Ordinary people worry today and postpone their happiness for tomorrow. Intelligent people are happy today and postpone their worries for tomorrow. Wise people only wish happiness for all, today and tomorrow. If you wish to have a lifetime of happiness, dedicate time every day to helping others smile with complete sincerity and enthusiasm.

2. Be imperfect. – Something that is really difficult, but totally worth it, is giving up on being perfect and beginning the journey of becoming your true self. The most beautiful part of this journey is simply returning to the peaceful feeling of being. This peace is the result of retraining your mind to process life as it is, rather than as you think it should be.

3. Be enthusiastic about what you’re doing. – You’re not given a good life or a bad life. You’re given life, and it’s up to you to make it good or bad. So wake up and get motivated; not everybody made it to today. Don’t take your time for granted. Don’t waste time thinking back to what you could have done differently yesterday. Keep your eyes on the road ahead and do it differently today. Wherever the road takes you, bring your passion. Whatever you do along the way, do it with all your heart.

4. Make the best of what happens. – More important than what happens to you, is what you make of what happens to you. The more thankful you are, the more beautiful this world appears. You must uncover the good in the bad, the happy in your sad, the gain in your pain, and what makes you
grateful not hateful.

5. Forgive your past self. – Sometimes, good people like you make bad choices. It doesn't mean you’re bad; it means you’re human. So get bored with your past; it’s over. Forgive yourself for what you think you did or didn't do, and focus on what you will do starting now.

6. Spend some time simply being and breathing. – The only way to live happily ever after is one day at a time. Just be, breathe, and think not about what you’re missing, but what you've been given. Happiness is something that comes into our lives gradually through the doors we don’t even
remember leaving open.

7. Learn something new. – It’s important to remember that you cannot become who you are capable of being by remaining exactly where you are. If you are not willing to learn and grow, no one can help you. But if you are determined to learn and grow, no one can stop you. In the end, there are no permanent jobs on this planet; we are all interning here. Learn from everyone, evolve, remain humble, and don’t forget to have a good time.

8. Look in the mirror, and tell yourself what you love about yourself. – What we see in the mirror is what we see in the world. Our disappointment in others perfectly reflects our disappointment in ourselves. Our acceptance of others perfectly reflects our acceptance of ourselves. Our ability to see potential in others perfectly reflects our ability to see potential in ourselves. Our patience with others perfectly reflects our patience with ourselves.

9. Focus on the qualities you like about those around you. – Whenever we focus on a person’s wonderful qualities, we have a wonderful relationship with them. Whenever we focus on a person’s not so wonderful qualities, we have a not so wonderful relationship with them. What we focus on grows in
our minds and hearts.

10. Say 'YES' to a spontaneous opportunity. – Everything in life can’t be planned. Some of the greatest opportunities will knock on your door when you least expect them to. Be flexible, be spontaneous, and
just say 'yes.'

How Dancing Can Improve Your Relationship

I am sure many women can agree that there is something magical about a man asking a woman to dance. Let’s face it, dinner and a movie, although a classic choice for date night, truly can get boring. Don’t you think that it is time to try something new and exciting? Why not try ballroom dancing! Believe it or not, ballroom dancing, or the “dance of love” can truly improve a relationship and can be a  rewarding experience that both partners can enjoy! Don’t believe me? Janet Carlson, author of “Quick Before The Music Stops: How Ballroom Saved My Life”, claims that their is an inevitable attraction that derives from a couple who is learning how to dance together. “Let’s face it, moving rhythmically to beautiful music together is a turn-on that is hard to resist. It’s hard not to enjoy the person who is right there helping you feel sexy, glamorous, and elegant.”

But why? Like a relationship, dancing involves three important entities that are crucial to a long-lasting, successful relationship: trust, respect, and of course a partnership. There is a balance of power and comfort that is established when a couple begins to learn how to dance. Carlson can agree! “One of the first things I learned from a dance coach was probably the most parallel between dance and love: Your job is to think about your partner’s comfort while you dance, and your partner’s job is to think about yours. The bottom line: consider your romantic partnership to be like that of a dance partnership; for a smooth, successful one, don’t step on each other’s toes, look out for your partner’s needs, and make sure he or she looks out for yours.”

Still need more convincing?

Ladies, I am sure you can agree that at times, we need to be in absolute control of a situation. After all, we are strong, self-sufficient, and independent. But guess what? When it comes to ballroom dancing, you must surrender to that need to be “in control” all the time. “I confess, being the kind of woman who’s mostly in charge, and self-sufficient, it’s kind of sexy to experience the man being in charge when it comes to dancing”, says Carlson. “It’s taught me to stop trying to do everything myself in a relationship.” Again, like dancing, a relationship is a partnership, responsibilities can be shared! Now, I don’t want to fool you, the man will not always be leading and the woman will not always be following, but surrendering to that initial need to be in control can be liberating. Learning how to ballroom dance together, can truly foster a loving, respectful, partnership off the dance floor.

We have all heard it before: It does indeed “Take two to tango”.

Songs I am Loving: Bruno Mars, When I Was Your Man

I first heard Bruno Mars sing this song at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show and fell in love. It is such a sweet rendition of regret and lost love. I find it sweet that although he made mistakes, he wishes her nothing but the best...

Here are the lyrics:

Same bed but it feels just

A little bit bigger now
Our song on the radio
But it don't sound the same
When our friends talk about you
All it does is just tear me down
Cause my heart breaks a little
When I hear your name
It all just sounds like (oooooh)
Mmm too young too dumb to realize

That I should've bought you flowers
And held your hand
Should've gave you all my hours
When I had the chance
Take you to every party
Cause all you wanted to do was dance
Now my baby is dancing
But she's dancing with another man

My pride, my ego, my needs, and my selfish ways
Caused a good strong woman like you to walk out my life
Now I never, never get to clean up the mess I made
Ooh and it haunts me every time I close my eyes
It all just sounds like (oooooh)
Mmm too young too dumb to realize

That I should've bought you flowers
And held your hands
Should've gave you all my hours
When I had the chance
Take you to every party
Cause all you wanted to do was dance
Now my baby is dancing
But she's dancing with another man

Although it hurts
I'll be the first to say
That I was wrong
Oh I know I'm probably much too late
To try and apologize for my mistakes
But I just want you to know

I hope he buys you flowers
I hope he hold you hands
Give you all his hours
When he has the chance
Take you to every party
Cause I remember how much
You loved to dance
Do all the things I should've done
When I was your man
Do all the things I should've done
When I was your man

“So it’s not gonna be easy. It’s gonna be really hard. We’re gonna have to work at this every day, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, for ever, you and me, every day. Will you do something for me, please? Just picture your life for me? 30 years from now, 40 years from now? What’s it look like? If it’s with him, go. Go! I lost you once, I think I can do it again. If I thought that’s what you really wanted. But don’t you take the easy way out.”

Relationships

"Later that day I got to thinking about relationships. There are that open you up to something new and exotic, those that are old and familiar, those that bring up lots of questions, those that bring you somewhere unexpected, those that bring you far from where you started, and those that bring you back. But the most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself. And if you can find someone to love the you, you love, well, that's just fabulous."

40 Ways to Let Go

40 Ways to Let Go & Feel Less Pain
by: Lori Deschene, the Founder of Tiny Buddha.

1. Learn a new skill instead of dwelling on the skills you never mastered.
2. Change your perception—see the root cause as a blessing in disguise.
3. Cry it out. According to Dr. William Frey II, PH.D., biochemist at the Ramset Medical Center in Minneapolis crying away your negative feelings releases harmful chemicals that build up in your body due to stress.
4. Channel your discontent into an immediate positive action—make some calls about new job opportunities, or walk to the community center to volunteer.
5. Use meditation or yoga to bring you into the present moment (instead of dwelling on the past or worrying about the future.)
6. Make a list of your accomplishments—even the small ones— and add to it daily. You’ll have to let go of a little discontentment to make space for this self satisfaction.
7. Visualize a box in your head labeled “Expectations.” Whenever you start dwelling on how things should be or should have been, mentally shelve the thoughts in this box.
8. Engage in a physical activity. Exercise decreases stress hormones and increases endorphins, chemicals that improve your state of mind.
9. Focus all your energy on something you can actually control, instead of dwelling on things you can’t.
10. Express your feelings through a creative outlet, like blogging or painting. Add this to your to-do list and cross it off when you’re done. This will be a visual reminder that you have actively chosen to release these feelings.
Let go of Anger and Bitterness
11. Feel it fully. If you stifle your feelings, they may leak out and affect everyone around you—not just the person who inspired your anger. Before you can let go of any emotion you have to feel it fully.
12. Give yourself a rant window. Let yourself vent for a day before confronting the person who troubled you. This may diffuse the hostility and give you time to plan a rational confrontation.
13. Remind yourself that anger hurts you more than the person who upset you, and visualize it melting away as an act of kindness to yourself.
14. If possible, express your anger to the person who offended youCommunicating how you feel may help you move on. Keep in mind that you can’t control how to offender responds; you can only control how clearly and kindly you express yourself.
15. Take responsibility. Many times when you’re angry, you focus on what someone else did that was wrong—which essentially gives away your power. When you focus on what you could have done better, you often feel empowered and less bitter.
16. Put yourself in the offender’s shoes. We all make mistakes; and odds are you could have easily slipped up just like your husband, father, or friend did. Compassion dissolves anger.
17. Metaphorically throw it away; i.e., jog with a backpack full of tennis balls. After you’ve built up a bit of rush, toss the balls one by one, labeling each as a part of your anger. (You’ll need to retrieve these—litter angers the earth!)
18. Use a stress ball, and express your anger physically and vocally when you use it.Make a scrunched up face or grunt. You may feel silly, but this allows you to actually express what you’re feeling inside.
19. Wear a rubber band on your wrist, and gently flick it when you start obsessing on angry thoughts. This trains your mind to associate that type of persistent negativity with something unpleasant.
20. Remind yourself these are your only three options: remove yourself from the situation, change it, or accept it. These acts create happiness; holding onto bitterness never does.
Let Go Of Past Relationships
21. Identify what the experience taught you to help develop a sense of closure.
22. Write everything you want to express in a letter. Even if you choose not to send it, clarifying your feelings will help you come to terms with reality as it is now.
23. Remember both the good and the bad. Even if appears this way now, the past was not perfect. Acknowledging this may minimize your sense of loss. As Laura Oliver says, “It’s easier to let go of a human than a hero.”
24. Un-romanticize the way you view love. Of course you’ll feel devastated if you believe you lost your soul mate. If you think you can find a love that amazing or better again it will be easier to move on.
25. Visualize an empowered single you—the person you were before meeting your last love. That person was pretty awesome, and now you have the chance to be him or her again.
26. Create a space that reflects your present reality. Take down his pictures; delete her emails from your saved folder.
27. Reward yourself for small acts of acceptance. Get a facial after you delete his number from your phone, or head out with friends after putting all her things in a box.
28. Hang this statement somewhere you can see it. “Loving myself means letting go.”
29. Replace your emotional thoughts with facts. When you think, “I’ll never feel loved again!” don’t resist that feeling. Instead, move on to another thought, like “I learned a new song for karaoke tonight.”
30. Use the silly voice technique. According to Russ Harris, author of The Happiness Trap, swapping the voice in your head with a cartoon voice will help take back power from the troubling thought.
Let Go Of Stress
31. Use a deep breathing technique, like ujayii, to soothe yourself and seep into the present moment.
32. Immerse yourself in a group activity. Enjoying the people in your life may help put your problems in perspective.
33. Consider this quotation by Eckhart Tolle: “Worry pretends to be necessary but serves no useful purpose.” Questioning how your stress serves you may help you let it go.
34. Metaphorically release it. Write down all your stresses and toss the paper into your fireplace.
35. Replace your thoughts. Notice when you begin thinking about something that stresses you so you can shift your thought process to something more pleasant—like your passion for your hobby.
36. Take a sauna break. Studies reveal that people who go to sauna at least twice a week for 10-30 minutes are less stressed after work than others with similar jobs who don’t.
37. Imagine your life 10 years from now. Then look 20 years into the future, and then 30. Realize that many of the things you’re worrying about don’t really matter in the grand scheme of things.
38. Organize your desk. According to Georgia Witkin, assistant director of psychiatry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, completing a small task increases your sense of control and decreases your stress level.
39. Use it up. Make two lists: one with the root causes of your stress, and one with actions to address them. As you complete these tasks, visualize yourself utilizing and depleting your “stress supply.”
40. Laugh it out. Research shows that laughter soothes tension, improves your immune system, and even eases pain. If you can’t relax for long, start with just ten minutes watching a funny video on YouTube.
It’s a long list, but there’s much left to be said! Can you think of anything to add to this list—other areas of life where we need to practice letting go, and other techniques to start doing it right now?

Amor Vincit Omnia: Love Conquers All

A quote for the hopeless romantic:

"After all the words and all the ink, and all the blank pages painted black with the adjectives of you, one thing is abundantly clear: nothing I write will ever be enough to sum you up."

The Greatest Thing...

One of my favorite poems I've written...

I dream vividly in color, of dance, of passion
of love; heart wrenching, volatile love.
The pounding of a heel, the allure of rouge lipstick;
The seductress tantalizing her partner.

I dream in fantasy.
Pink fireworks, cascading brilliantly
through glittered clouds.
Perhaps of rain; camouflaging the tears of the lonely.

I dream of fire;
The jealous tendency that prevails
from dishonest tongues.
The echo of the soul; Pure unbridled madness

I dream of sweet tranquility upon the
sound of his voice;
the melody of love
A promise of forever, until her very last breath...

I dream of the end;
a term far too permanent
For,
"The greatest thing you will ever learn....
is just to love.

And to be loved in return.

Be-you-tiful: A Guide to Loving YOU!

The journey of self-love, is indeed that; a journey. Becoming comfortable in your own skin is a life-long process that involves letting go of  past insecurity and becoming satisfied with your body image, personality, skills, abilities and even your limitations.  But, before you get too discouraged, there are things that you can do RIGHT now that will lead you down the path of not only liking, but, LOVING who you see in the mirror!

Stop criticizing yourself!

For many, the mirror is a scary, shallow place. But why? Look at you girl! You are stunning!  Those laugh lines? The wrinkles? The scar from your childhood? These are all beautiful things because they are physical representations of who you are! Don't be ashamed of them! And while you are there, why don't you smile. Why? Because there is no one in the universe quite like you!

Be "Ok" with what you have accomplished so far.

Let's be honest, life does not always play fair. But look on the bright side: HOW you chose to react to life's little curve balls is what makes you the star player in the game. Be "ok" with small successes, the minute successes; the things that you are secretly proud of. You have a story to tell, and I can't wait to hear it.

Stay Positive.

Les Brown once said "Don't let the negativity given to you by the world disempower you-instead give to yourself that which empowers you." Empower yourself with positivity. Forget about those who wish to belittle your ambitions. You are valuable and never underestimate the power of you!

Know that you are wonderfully unique.

Dr. Suess was onto something when he uttered those infamous words: "Today you are you. That is truer than true.  There is no one alive who is youer than you." You are a divine collection of stories, secrets and beautiful anomalies. Please don't ever change!

You are MORE than you think you are.

You are a mother, a daughter, a best friend, a confidant. People have trusted you, loved you, admired you and inspired you. And you know what? People will continue to do these things because you are you!

You are bigger than that feeling of not-enough-ness.

You ARE enough even if there is a tiny voice in the back of your head doubting you. Stop trying to service the "ideal". The "ideal" is boring, and I prefer that quirky personality you got going on.

Be on your own side.

Your a team player right? Then why don't you start playing on your team? The negative, unkind comments you tell yourself? That needs to stop. If you want people to support you and stand by your side, be confident with who you are. We dig confidence.

Ask for what you want.

That raise you have been hoping for? Put on that power suit, the killer heels, walk like you mean it and go ask your boss for what you rightfully deserve. Believe it or not, the sudden lack of subtlety, may win your boss's respect.

Open your heart.
You never know who or what will find it's way in...Love with fearless and reckless abandonment.

It's not over!

You are continually growing, changing, and creating. You can be who ever you would like to be. No one is stopping you! Be a chef today a world traveler tomorrow. Remember your kindergarten teacher asking: "What would you like to be when you grow up?" You can still be that star-struck, enthusiastic 5 year old version of yourself. Go ahead, follow that dream. Reach for that unattainable star. Life is happening whether you would like to admit it or not. READY, SET, GO!

Lost in a Moment

"I'm not saying that at some point love isn't staying up until 2 am phone calls or stealing kisses when you least expect it, or instantly falling for each other's favorite songs because it is, or at least that's what the lead up to it feels like, but real love, is so much more. It's going out at 12 am to get something to eat for your wife who can't get out of bed, it's listening to them as they explode with venerability on your living room couch talking about how they were only so young when their parents passed on. It's remembering how someone likes their coffee in the morning without asking-without ever asking, it's visiting someone in the hospital knowing the last thing you want to do is see them in that condition, its wanting to be with that person despite everything, the future, the past, and everything in between, it's the intimate things that you don't even realize involve such intimacy  but they do, in secret, like the pinky promises you two made behind your back, to love one another for always, in the time you thought you were in love, when you were actually just on your way to it."

Maybe You Should Start Listening

As I sat behind my desk today, I couldn't help but feel as though there was something missing; a greater part of me fading away. I was exhausted, despite the influx of caffeine I subjected my body to. Bewilderment and confusion flooded my mind as I tried to figure out why I stopped fueling my passion. Was I really responsible for letting the flame fade? When did I stop pursuing my dreams? When did I let it all slip through my fingers? Sure, I can make excuses, point fingers, and blame the innocent for my brief hiatus but I would be in denial.  There's no denying I lost my faith in my ability; I settled for less than mediocre.

Thankfully I snapped back to reality when I came across an article I didn't think I needed to read.

"Your Life Is Speaking, Are You Listening." HmphNo, I don't think my life is speaking to me today, I refuted in my sarcastic inner monologue. But, just like a bad car accident, I couldn't look away. "Where is your head these days? Are you daydreaming about what should have been, could have been; or are you still looking for what is supposed to be the life path of your dreams? Has your life come to a mundane daily routine?" Damn. This guy is good. So good, that I secretly feared he would ask "Do you have a glass of wine every night with a bowl full of Cheetos? At that point, I would have immediately closed the browser convinced that the US government, was in fact, watching our every move.  But dude had a point, so I kept reading.

I soon discovered that my life was speaking to me, yet I had been ignoring its persistent nagging. I decided it was time to do something, so I made a list. I made a list of all the things I long to accomplish; a list of my dreams; a list of stories I long to tell. A list that borders the impossible, yet I don't seem to mind.

I feel refreshed; rejuvenated.and can't wait to start crossing off the to-dos.
