Black Balloons

The party is over; diamonds shatter upon the floor where we dance unwarily contemplating each others next move. Although red wine lingers within the cracks of your lips, you're intoxicated by the lights spinning on the ceiling. A black balloon with a red piece of string floats among the fog; dreary and thick of stale cigarette smoke. You're smiling, stumbling on the words that threaten to fall from the corners of your mouth. Amazingly, they fail to canvas the space between us as you drop the bottle held loosely in your hand. I'm nervous, deciphering the language of your movement. Like a movie, black and white, you move forward anticipating the reaction of envious spectators. Your lips find mine; surprisingly cool, longing for my response. Much like the black balloon, I drift away in your kiss--

What Our Parents Never Taught Us

Here’s what our parents never taught us:

You will stay up on your rooftop until sunlight peels away the husk of the moon,
chainsmoking cigarettes and reading Baudelaire, and
you will learn that you only ever want to fall in love with someone
who will stay up to watch the sun rise with you.
You will fall in love with train rides, and sooner or later you will
realize that nowhere seems like home anymore.
A woman will kiss you and you’ll think her lips are two petals
rubbing against your mouth.
You will not tell anyone that you liked it.
It’s okay.
It is beautiful to love humans in a world where love is a metaphor for lust.
You can leave if you want, with only your skin as a carry-on.
All you need is a twenty in your pocket and a bus ticket.
All you need is someone on the other end of the map, thinking about the supple
curves of your body, to guide you to a home that stretches out for miles
and miles on end.
You will lie to everyone you love.
They will love you anyways.
One day you’ll wake up and realize that you are too big for your own skin.
Molt.
Don’t be afraid.
Your body is a house where the shutters blow in and out
against the windowpane.
You are a hurricane-prone area.
The glass will break through often.
But it’s okay. I promise.
Remember,
a stranger once told you that the breeze
here is something worth writing poems about.

Spring Cleaning for the Mind: 10 Ways to Make Your Day Better

1. Make someone else smile. – Ordinary people worry today and postpone their happiness for tomorrow. Intelligent people are happy today and postpone their worries for tomorrow. Wise people only wish happiness for all, today and tomorrow. If you wish to have a lifetime of happiness, dedicate time every day to helping others smile with complete sincerity and enthusiasm.

2. Be imperfect. – Something that is really difficult, but totally worth it, is giving up on being perfect and beginning the journey of becoming your true self. The most beautiful part of this journey is simply returning to the peaceful feeling of being. This peace is the result of retraining your mind to process life as it is, rather than as you think it should be.

3. Be enthusiastic about what you’re doing. – You’re not given a good life or a bad life. You’re given life, and it’s up to you to make it good or bad. So wake up and get motivated; not everybody made it to today. Don’t take your time for granted. Don’t waste time thinking back to what you could have done differently yesterday. Keep your eyes on the road ahead and do it differently today. Wherever the road takes you, bring your passion. Whatever you do along the way, do it with all your heart.

4. Make the best of what happens. – More important than what happens to you, is what you make of what happens to you. The more thankful you are, the more beautiful this world appears. You must uncover the good in the bad, the happy in your sad, the gain in your pain, and what makes you
grateful not hateful.

5. Forgive your past self. – Sometimes, good people like you make bad choices. It doesn't mean you’re bad; it means you’re human. So get bored with your past; it’s over. Forgive yourself for what you think you did or didn't do, and focus on what you will do starting now.

6. Spend some time simply being and breathing. – The only way to live happily ever after is one day at a time. Just be, breathe, and think not about what you’re missing, but what you've been given. Happiness is something that comes into our lives gradually through the doors we don’t even
remember leaving open.

7. Learn something new. – It’s important to remember that you cannot become who you are capable of being by remaining exactly where you are. If you are not willing to learn and grow, no one can help you. But if you are determined to learn and grow, no one can stop you. In the end, there are no permanent jobs on this planet; we are all interning here. Learn from everyone, evolve, remain humble, and don’t forget to have a good time.

8. Look in the mirror, and tell yourself what you love about yourself. – What we see in the mirror is what we see in the world. Our disappointment in others perfectly reflects our disappointment in ourselves. Our acceptance of others perfectly reflects our acceptance of ourselves. Our ability to see potential in others perfectly reflects our ability to see potential in ourselves. Our patience with others perfectly reflects our patience with ourselves.

9. Focus on the qualities you like about those around you. – Whenever we focus on a person’s wonderful qualities, we have a wonderful relationship with them. Whenever we focus on a person’s not so wonderful qualities, we have a not so wonderful relationship with them. What we focus on grows in
our minds and hearts.

10. Say 'YES' to a spontaneous opportunity. – Everything in life can’t be planned. Some of the greatest opportunities will knock on your door when you least expect them to. Be flexible, be spontaneous, and
just say 'yes.'

How Dancing Can Improve Your Relationship

I am sure many women can agree that there is something magical about a man asking a woman to dance. Let’s face it, dinner and a movie, although a classic choice for date night, truly can get boring. Don’t you think that it is time to try something new and exciting? Why not try ballroom dancing! Believe it or not, ballroom dancing, or the “dance of love” can truly improve a relationship and can be a  rewarding experience that both partners can enjoy! Don’t believe me? Janet Carlson, author of “Quick Before The Music Stops: How Ballroom Saved My Life”, claims that their is an inevitable attraction that derives from a couple who is learning how to dance together. “Let’s face it, moving rhythmically to beautiful music together is a turn-on that is hard to resist. It’s hard not to enjoy the person who is right there helping you feel sexy, glamorous, and elegant.”

But why? Like a relationship, dancing involves three important entities that are crucial to a long-lasting, successful relationship: trust, respect, and of course a partnership. There is a balance of power and comfort that is established when a couple begins to learn how to dance. Carlson can agree! “One of the first things I learned from a dance coach was probably the most parallel between dance and love: Your job is to think about your partner’s comfort while you dance, and your partner’s job is to think about yours. The bottom line: consider your romantic partnership to be like that of a dance partnership; for a smooth, successful one, don’t step on each other’s toes, look out for your partner’s needs, and make sure he or she looks out for yours.”

Still need more convincing?

Ladies, I am sure you can agree that at times, we need to be in absolute control of a situation. After all, we are strong, self-sufficient, and independent. But guess what? When it comes to ballroom dancing, you must surrender to that need to be “in control” all the time. “I confess, being the kind of woman who’s mostly in charge, and self-sufficient, it’s kind of sexy to experience the man being in charge when it comes to dancing”, says Carlson. “It’s taught me to stop trying to do everything myself in a relationship.” Again, like dancing, a relationship is a partnership, responsibilities can be shared! Now, I don’t want to fool you, the man will not always be leading and the woman will not always be following, but surrendering to that initial need to be in control can be liberating. Learning how to ballroom dance together, can truly foster a loving, respectful, partnership off the dance floor.

We have all heard it before: It does indeed “Take two to tango”.

Songs I am Loving: Bruno Mars, When I Was Your Man

I first heard Bruno Mars sing this song at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show and fell in love. It is such a sweet rendition of regret and lost love. I find it sweet that although he made mistakes, he wishes her nothing but the best...

Here are the lyrics:

Same bed but it feels just

A little bit bigger now
Our song on the radio
But it don't sound the same
When our friends talk about you
All it does is just tear me down
Cause my heart breaks a little
When I hear your name
It all just sounds like (oooooh)
Mmm too young too dumb to realize

That I should've bought you flowers
And held your hand
Should've gave you all my hours
When I had the chance
Take you to every party
Cause all you wanted to do was dance
Now my baby is dancing
But she's dancing with another man

My pride, my ego, my needs, and my selfish ways
Caused a good strong woman like you to walk out my life
Now I never, never get to clean up the mess I made
Ooh and it haunts me every time I close my eyes
It all just sounds like (oooooh)
Mmm too young too dumb to realize

That I should've bought you flowers
And held your hands
Should've gave you all my hours
When I had the chance
Take you to every party
Cause all you wanted to do was dance
Now my baby is dancing
But she's dancing with another man

Although it hurts
I'll be the first to say
That I was wrong
Oh I know I'm probably much too late
To try and apologize for my mistakes
But I just want you to know

I hope he buys you flowers
I hope he hold you hands
Give you all his hours
When he has the chance
Take you to every party
Cause I remember how much
You loved to dance
Do all the things I should've done
When I was your man
Do all the things I should've done
When I was your man

"There is never a time or place for true love. It happens accidentally, in a heartbeat, in a single flashing, throbbing moment."- Sarah Dessen, The Truth About Forever

"We fell in love, despite our differences, and once we did, something rare and beautiful was created. For me, love like that has only happened once, and that's why every minute we spent together has been seared in my memory. Valentines Day Inspiration: 5 Romantic Movie Quotes

“So it’s not gonna be easy. It’s gonna be really hard. We’re gonna have to work at this every day, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, for ever, you and me, every day. Will you do something for me, please? Just picture your life for me? 30 years from now, 40 years from now? What’s it look like? If it’s with him, go. Go! I lost you once, I think I can do it again. If I thought that’s what you really wanted. But don’t you take the easy way out.”
—Noah (Ryan Gosling) to Allie (Rachel McAdams)
The Notebook

“I love you. You’re my only reason to stay alive… if that’s what I am.”
—Edward (Robert Pattinson) to Bella (Kristen Stewart)
Twilight

“Me? I’m scared of everything. I’m scared of what I saw, I’m scared of what I did, of who I am, and most of all I’m scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I’m with you.”
—Baby (Jennifer Grey) to Johnny (Patrick Swayze).
Dirty Dancing

“…I might be the only one who appreciates how amazing you are in every single thing that you do, and … I watch them, wondering how they can watch you bring their food, and clear their tables and never get that they just met the greatest woman alive. And the fact that I get it makes me feel good, about me.”
—Melvin (Jack Nicholson) to Carol (Helen Hunt).
As Good As It Gets

“But for now, let me say — without hope or agenda, just because it’s Christmas and at Christmas you tell the truth — to me, you are perfect. And my wasted heart will love you. Until you look like this [picture of a mummy]. Merry Christmas.”
—Mark (Andrew Lincoln) to Juliet (Keira Knightley)

Relationships

"Later that day I got to thinking about relationships. There are that open you up to something new and exotic, those that are old and familiar, those that bring up lots of questions, those that bring you somewhere unexpected, those that bring you far from where you started, and those that bring you back. But the most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself. And if you can find someone to love the you, you love, well, that's just fabulous."

40 Ways to Let Go

40 Ways to Let Go & Feel Less Pain
by: Lori Deschene, the Founder of Tiny Buddha.

1. Learn a new skill instead of dwelling on the skills you never mastered.
2. Change your perception—see the root cause as a blessing in disguise.
3. Cry it out. According to Dr. William Frey II, PH.D., biochemist at the Ramset Medical Center in Minneapolis crying away your negative feelings releases harmful chemicals that build up in your body due to stress.
4. Channel your discontent into an immediate positive action—make some calls about new job opportunities, or walk to the community center to volunteer.
5. Use meditation or yoga to bring you into the present moment (instead of dwelling on the past or worrying about the future.)
6. Make a list of your accomplishments—even the small ones— and add to it daily. You’ll have to let go of a little discontentment to make space for this self satisfaction.
7. Visualize a box in your head labeled “Expectations.” Whenever you start dwelling on how things should be or should have been, mentally shelve the thoughts in this box.
8. Engage in a physical activity. Exercise decreases stress hormones and increases endorphins, chemicals that improve your state of mind.
9. Focus all your energy on something you can actually control, instead of dwelling on things you can’t.
10. Express your feelings through a creative outlet, like blogging or painting. Add this to your to-do list and cross it off when you’re done. This will be a visual reminder that you have actively chosen to release these feelings.
Let go of Anger and Bitterness
11. Feel it fully. If you stifle your feelings, they may leak out and affect everyone around you—not just the person who inspired your anger. Before you can let go of any emotion you have to feel it fully.
12. Give yourself a rant window. Let yourself vent for a day before confronting the person who troubled you. This may diffuse the hostility and give you time to plan a rational confrontation.
13. Remind yourself that anger hurts you more than the person who upset you, and visualize it melting away as an act of kindness to yourself.
14. If possible, express your anger to the person who offended youCommunicating how you feel may help you move on. Keep in mind that you can’t control how to offender responds; you can only control how clearly and kindly you express yourself.
15. Take responsibility. Many times when you’re angry, you focus on what someone else did that was wrong—which essentially gives away your power. When you focus on what you could have done better, you often feel empowered and less bitter.
16. Put yourself in the offender’s shoes. We all make mistakes; and odds are you could have easily slipped up just like your husband, father, or friend did. Compassion dissolves anger.
17. Metaphorically throw it away; i.e., jog with a backpack full of tennis balls. After you’ve built up a bit of rush, toss the balls one by one, labeling each as a part of your anger. (You’ll need to retrieve these—litter angers the earth!)
18. Use a stress ball, and express your anger physically and vocally when you use it.Make a scrunched up face or grunt. You may feel silly, but this allows you to actually express what you’re feeling inside.
19. Wear a rubber band on your wrist, and gently flick it when you start obsessing on angry thoughts. This trains your mind to associate that type of persistent negativity with something unpleasant.
20. Remind yourself these are your only three options: remove yourself from the situation, change it, or accept it. These acts create happiness; holding onto bitterness never does.
Let Go Of Past Relationships
21. Identify what the experience taught you to help develop a sense of closure.
22. Write everything you want to express in a letter. Even if you choose not to send it, clarifying your feelings will help you come to terms with reality as it is now.
23. Remember both the good and the bad. Even if appears this way now, the past was not perfect. Acknowledging this may minimize your sense of loss. As Laura Oliver says, “It’s easier to let go of a human than a hero.”
24. Un-romanticize the way you view love. Of course you’ll feel devastated if you believe you lost your soul mate. If you think you can find a love that amazing or better again it will be easier to move on.
25. Visualize an empowered single you—the person you were before meeting your last love. That person was pretty awesome, and now you have the chance to be him or her again.
26. Create a space that reflects your present reality. Take down his pictures; delete her emails from your saved folder.
27. Reward yourself for small acts of acceptance. Get a facial after you delete his number from your phone, or head out with friends after putting all her things in a box.
28. Hang this statement somewhere you can see it. “Loving myself means letting go.”
29. Replace your emotional thoughts with facts. When you think, “I’ll never feel loved again!” don’t resist that feeling. Instead, move on to another thought, like “I learned a new song for karaoke tonight.”
30. Use the silly voice technique. According to Russ Harris, author of The Happiness Trap, swapping the voice in your head with a cartoon voice will help take back power from the troubling thought.
Let Go Of Stress
31. Use a deep breathing technique, like ujayii, to soothe yourself and seep into the present moment.
32. Immerse yourself in a group activity. Enjoying the people in your life may help put your problems in perspective.
33. Consider this quotation by Eckhart Tolle: “Worry pretends to be necessary but serves no useful purpose.” Questioning how your stress serves you may help you let it go.
34. Metaphorically release it. Write down all your stresses and toss the paper into your fireplace.
35. Replace your thoughts. Notice when you begin thinking about something that stresses you so you can shift your thought process to something more pleasant—like your passion for your hobby.
36. Take a sauna break. Studies reveal that people who go to sauna at least twice a week for 10-30 minutes are less stressed after work than others with similar jobs who don’t.
37. Imagine your life 10 years from now. Then look 20 years into the future, and then 30. Realize that many of the things you’re worrying about don’t really matter in the grand scheme of things.
38. Organize your desk. According to Georgia Witkin, assistant director of psychiatry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, completing a small task increases your sense of control and decreases your stress level.
39. Use it up. Make two lists: one with the root causes of your stress, and one with actions to address them. As you complete these tasks, visualize yourself utilizing and depleting your “stress supply.”
40. Laugh it out. Research shows that laughter soothes tension, improves your immune system, and even eases pain. If you can’t relax for long, start with just ten minutes watching a funny video on YouTube.
It’s a long list, but there’s much left to be said! Can you think of anything to add to this list—other areas of life where we need to practice letting go, and other techniques to start doing it right now?

Amor Vincit Omnia: Love Conquers All

A quote for the hopeless romantic:

"After all the words and all the ink, and all the blank pages painted black with the adjectives of you, one thing is abundantly clear: nothing I write will ever be enough to sum you up."

The Greatest Thing...

One of my favorite poems I've written...

I dream vividly in color, of dance, of passion
of love; heart wrenching, volatile love.
The pounding of a heel, the allure of rouge lipstick;
The seductress tantalizing her partner.

I dream in fantasy.
Pink fireworks, cascading brilliantly
through glittered clouds.
Perhaps of rain; camouflaging the tears of the lonely.

I dream of fire;
The jealous tendency that prevails
from dishonest tongues.
The echo of the soul; Pure unbridled madness

I dream of sweet tranquility upon the
sound of his voice;
the melody of love
A promise of forever, until her very last breath...

I dream of the end;
a term far too permanent
For,
"The greatest thing you will ever learn....
is just to love.

And to be loved in return.

Lost in a Moment

"I'm not saying that at some point love isn't staying up until 2 am phone calls or stealing kisses when you least expect it, or instantly falling for each other's favorite songs because it is, or at least that's what the lead up to it feels like, but real love, is so much more. It's going out at 12 am to get something to eat for your wife who can't get out of bed, it's listening to them as they explode with venerability on your living room couch talking about how they were only so young when their parents passed on. It's remembering how someone likes their coffee in the morning without asking-without ever asking, it's visiting someone in the hospital knowing the last thing you want to do is see them in that condition, its wanting to be with that person despite everything, the future, the past, and everything in between, it's the intimate things that you don't even realize involve such intimacy  but they do, in secret, like the pinky promises you two made behind your back, to love one another for always, in the time you thought you were in love, when you were actually just on your way to it."

How To Be A Better (happier & healthier) Human Being

"Never touch anything with half of your heart, be present, endlessly loving and compassionate towards others.

Confront any challenging situation first with a deep breath.

Wander.

Remember that your own happiness and comfort comes about all things.

Before reacting-understand.

Eat breakfast every morning.

Find the place in the flowers.

Remember what is important to you.

Treat your body kindly.

Be honest.

Get to know yourself.

Take things at your own pace.

Don't feel embarrassed to feel, laugh, cry, sing or love.

Remember that what's right for someone else may not be what is right for you (and that's okay.)

Never be afraid or ashamed to ask for help.

Do what you love.

Remember that you always have a choice .

Find joy in what life really is--living."

Love: Can You Explain It?

“Love doesn't give you very many choices. When you love someone, you just want to be with them. If they break your heart, you will still love them. Because hearts are easy to break, and though love is tender and sometimes fragile, love isn't.

Love sort of envelops you. It covers you like a giant shadow, then pulls you in like a blanket. You are so warm. The feeling surrounds you, and no matter how you feel, it is always there. You can't escape it. But you wouldn't want to. You are so, so safe. You can't remember the last time you were this happy. Were you ever? This happy?

Every second you are apart feels like hours. Sometimes, right before you fall asleep, you miss them so much it hurts. You ache for them. Their warmth. Their touch. Their smell. You need them. When you can't sleep you wish and wish and wish that they would wake up and talk to you. When you dream of them, you wake up smiling. When pain stabs into you, you reach out for them. You cry to them, begging them to hold you and make it all go away, make everything go away.

Love addicts you to its feeling. You never, ever want to lose that feeling. Sometimes the fear of losing love drives people to do crazy things. Like buy a plane ticket. Make a phone call. Run out of a class. Cry. Write. Laugh.

Because when you love someone, you really love them. You give them your whole heart. You trust them. You never want to be away from them. Sometimes, you don't even need their words. You just need them there.

Love is such an amazing thing, and too many people take it for granted. If you're in love, don't let it go. Don't you dare let it go.”

Love In The Eyes of Bob Marley

Only once in your life, I truly believe, you find someone who can completely turn your world around. You tell them things that you have never shared with another soul and they absorb everything you say and actually want to hear more. You share hopes for the future, dreams that will never come true, goals that were never achieved and the many disappointments life has thrown at you. When something wonderful happens, you can’t wait to tell them about it, knowing they will share in your excitement. They are not embarrassed to cry with you when you are hurting or laugh with you when you make a fool of yourself. Never do they hurt your feelings or make you feel like you are not good enough, but rather they build you up and show you the things about yourself that make you special and even beautiful. There is never any pressure, jealousy or competition but only a quiet calmness when they are around. You can be yourself and not worry about what they will think of you because they love you for who you are. The things that seem insignificant to most people such as a note, song or walk become invaluable treasures kept safe in your heart to cherish forever. Memories of your childhood come back and are so clear and vivid it’s like being young again. Colours seem brighter and more brilliant. Laughter seems part of daily life where before it was infrequent or didn’t exist at all. A phone call or two during the day helps to get you through a long day’s work and always brings a smile to your face. In their presence, there’s no need for continuous conversation, but you find you’re quite content in just having them nearby. Things that never interested you before become fascinating because you know they are important to this person who is so special to you. You think of this person on every occasion and in everything you do. Simple things bring them to mind like a pale blue sky, gentle wind or even a storm cloud on the horizon. You open your heart knowing that there’s a chance it may be broken one day and in opening your heart, you experience a love and joy that you never dreamed possible. You find that being vulnerable is the only way to allow your heart to feel true pleasure that’s so real it scares you. You find strength in knowing you have a true friend and possibly a soul mate who will remain loyal to the end. Life seems completely different, exciting and worthwhile. Your only hope and security is in knowing that they are a part of your life.”

Case of the Ex

Ex-flings.

Ex-boyfriends.

Ex-fiances.

What do all these men have in common?

Well the answer is simple. These men have the super ability known as "I know you are happy-itis-and-I-want-to-throw-you-a-curve-ball"

How do you diagnose?

(Well, if your ex's have done any of the following they HAVE the disease and should the seek attention of a trained professional promptly.)

1.  The cute text you get from him when you are on a date with the rebound.
How did he find out you were "interested" in dating someone new?! WHO KNOWS?! But he did, so despite your better efforts to move on he sends a text to the tune of: "I miss you". Now, even though you would like to boil in rage, the three words kinda make you melt. Your mind begins to wander...What if? What if he misses me? Stop. He does not miss you. He misses how he used to be the center of your attention.

2. The "bump into", "You look great":
Was it accidental or planned? Probably planned. Thanks to Facebook and your best girl friends, you could easily stalk any man on the planet. With that being said, a "girls night out" could easily turn into an evening of ulterior motives. Oh come on, you know you have secretly planning this evening for months now. The late night sessions at the gym, the carrots and celery stashed in your fridge, that amazingly sexy top you shouldn't have bought? Ya, that's all for Mr. Ex. You want his jaw to drop; that "I should have never dumped you" drunken slur at 2am (probably tangled within his sheets). Ah, you are not fooling me ladies, we do this to ourselves. Because in the morning, he has that classic speech (after you have spent the entire evening awake plotting your wedding) "I'm not ready to get back into a serious relationship. I think we still need time and space." Also known as: "I had too much to drink, you looked hot, was wondering if you were still good in bed".

3. You and his new girlfriend bump into each other in the bathroom at the bar.
This can not get anymore awkward. How do you know she is the new GF? Yep, you guessed it: Facebook, your friends, and probably some sneaky texts he sent to you behind her back. While I am on the subject, why do men continue to send you (the ex-girlfriend) texts when he is "happily" dating someone new? Another mystery; another blog post. Anyways, you ladies know what I am talking about. You are squatting in the stall with two of your best friends complaining about her (of course) and as you exit the stall she's applying lip gloss staring at you.

Uh, Plan B? Well Plan B is dependent on two things....
1. How much have you had to drink?
and
2. How much has SHE had to drink?

The rest is history...but you can imagine it's not pretty.

4. The encounter with the ex and his um... new WIFE?
When the hell did that happen? Must I reiterate? How the hell COULD that happen? When did he stop being such a d-bag?! I kid, I kid. But seriously, has there been some sort of cosmic change that altered the state of commitment-phobe men?! When did they all start getting down on one knee? And where the hell were we!?

Ladies, this may be a difficult spoon to swallow, but maybe we should be honest with ourselves...

We were not the "one".

Yes, we were not the one he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. BUT SHE IS. (hopefully--we have an overwhelmingly alarming divorce rate that we must do something about...)

It's hard to believe ladies, but things between your ex didn't work out for a reason. He married her because he was giving you the opportunity to marry the right one. He was simply doing you a favor. And I know it kinda "bleeps" with your mind, but think on the bright side, happiness may already be in your heart or lurking around the corner. Don't look back when your future is in front of you.

Love is difficult and even when you find yourself madly in love with someone else, a part of you will always wander down memory lane. But don't let it get to you, if it was easy it would not be exciting.
