Excerpts & Confessions of an Unpublished Writer VI

The room was dark and it smelled of faint cologne. Possibly sweat. The curtains were drawn but a glimmer of light found its way through the cracks of the velvet fabric casting shadows upon his bed. There he laid, lifeless. His body twisted within the depths of his navy blue comforter. Her feet, like cement seized to move as she stared at her reflection in the mirror. Black mascara covered her pale face, her green eyes bloodshot. Quickly, she rubbed it off and smoothed the hair around her face. "Carrie is that you?" A quiet voice asked.

Slowly, she moved. Her mind a web of confusion with each passing step. "Yes Vinnie, it's me. How are you doing?" She asked regretfully, knowing the answer to her own question. As their eyes met, a multitude of hardship flooded the room. The tears that she promised to hold back, cascaded down her face. He too, was unable to hold back the tears he had silently protested. His beautiful brown eyes, were now black with despair. Not knowing what else to do, she wrapped him in her arms.

Love, she thought, was not supposed to end like this. And suddenly, as if they had shared the same fleeting thought, he spoke. " I remember the first time I laid eyes on her, he started-his voice shallow, deep. "She took my breath away. She was beautiful. I can't even explain it. I came home that day and told my mother that she was going to be the girl I marry. I can't do this Carrie. I can't. Again, not knowing what to say, she held him tighter; closer. For a brief moment, she wished she could disappear. Everything was happening too fast; too soon. How can life be so fragile she wondered?

For an hour neither of the spoke, hypnotized by their own thoughts. But as he thought of Stephanie, she thought of him. It happened suddenly, she remembered. It was upon a fit of laughter; a private joke. He had looked her in the eyes with a smile that melted her heart and in that very moment she realized she was in love with her childhood best friend.  The feeling, however, was bittersweet. And as she remembered drawing hearts throughout her math notebook in hopes that she would someday win his heart, reality interrupted her thoughts. His voice, pleading, "Carrie will you stay with me tonight?"
